To quote the NY Rangers Website regarding the very beginning of Brian Leetch's Career:
?Brian Leetch skated in his first NHL game against the St. Louis Blues on Feb. 29, xxxx, in what marked the beginning of his 16-year journey to the MSG rafters.
If his one season at Boston College didn't have Rangers fans excited enough about the club's xxxx first round draft choice, then seeing Leetch perform for the United States at the xxxx Winter Olympic Games in Calgary surely did the trick. After posting 74 points in 50 games for the U.S. National Team prior to the Olympics, Leetch was 1-5-6 over six matches as captain of Team USA in Calgary, the first of three Winter Olympics in which Leetch represented his country.
Having solidified his place as an elite National Hockey League prospect with his play and leadership in Calgary, Leetch was set to make his debut for the Rangers.
The much-anticipated event took place against the St. Louis Blues on Feb. 29, xxxx at Madison Square Garden, and Leetch, just two days shy of his 20th birthday, did not disappoint. Early in the second period of what would turn out to be a 5-2 Rangers victory, Leetch picked up an assist on a goal scored by team captain Kelly Kisio. That point was the first of the 1,028 he would record in his NHL career, including 981 as a member of the Rangers.
Spurred by Leetch's play, the Rangers closed out the season 10-5-2 with their new defenseman in the lineup. Leetch was 2-12-14 in those 17 contests, recording points in 10 of the 17 matches. His first NHL goal was scored against Edmonton's Grant Fuhr on March 24, when he also produced the first three-point game of his career, in a resounding 6-1 Rangers victory.
And from that first taste of the National Hockey League, the stage had been set for Leetch's dynamic rookie season the following year and his ensuing magical 17-year run in the NHL.?
